UFC 163 Breakdown and Predictions

The year of 2012 was deemed (the year of injuries) for the UFC.Here we are in mid-2013 and another injury has plagued the sport. Originally, UFC 163 was headline by Anthony Pettis vs. Jose Aldo after Pettis decided to drop a weight class and challenge the long time featherweight champion; however, an injury forced Pettis out of the bout. Chan Sung Jung was called to step up and face the champion,Aldo. The co-main event is former UFC light heavy weight champion Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis, which many people believe will secure the clear number one contender for the UFC light heavy weight division. The rest of the card hosts a UFC ultimate fighter winner and a UFC veteran. This card offers everything for the most hardcore fan to a fan new to the sport with up and coming fighters.

John Linker is on a two fight win streak coming into this bout with Jose Maria, a newcomer to the UFC, riding a 12 fight win streak and finishing his last 8 fights. Linker has his hands full welcoming in the long time MMA veteran Maria to the UFC. His keys to victory are utilizing his well-rounded MMA skills and rely heavily on his strong cardio which he uses to stay extremely aggressive in his bouts. Maria is coming to the UFC to make a statement and show why he deserves to be here. His keys to victory are experience, heavy hands, and crafty submissions. Look for this battle to be fast paced and very entertaining.

My prediction: Linker will utilize his tempo and control the fight winning a UD.

Thales Leitesis currently fighting on a three fight win streak. This will be his first fight back in the UFC since UFC 101. Since then, he has went 6-1 in other organizations. He faces Tom Watson who is looking to put together a two fight win streak. Leites is looking to get a W in his first bout back in the UFC.His key to victory is his world class grappling. Look for Leites to take this fight to the ground and work for a submission. Watson,on the other hand, has other plans for this fight. His key to victory is striking: he needs to stay in the center of the octagon and keep Leites at bay with his punching combinations. This fight will clearly be a battle of imposing their will. Whoever manages to do so will win this bout.

My prediction: Leites will pressure Watson against the cage, dirty box, and look for takedowns and submissions ultimately ending in a UD.

Cezar Ferreira is the Ultimate Fighter Brazil winner and looking to make a statement in the middleweight division. He takes on Thiago Santos,a newcomer to the UFC, who is looking to start his UFC career. Ferreira is looking to put a two fight win streak together. With this fight, his keys to victory are BJJ and striking. He is very well rounded and utilizes his skills well. Santos will come into this bout looking to show the world who Thiago Santos is. His key to victory is utilizing his kicking abilities. Look for some flashy powerful high kicks. Watch as these two men battle in a very competitive bout.

My Predictions: Ferreira controls most of the fight on the ground and takes a hard fought UD.

Lyoto Machida will take on rising light heavy weight competitor Phil Davis. Many people believe this win will secure the victor as the number one contender and next in line at the UFC light heavy weight belt. Machida is a former UFC light heavy weight champion and his keys to victory are implementing his unorthodox style and maintaining elusiveness. He will combine these skills and his experience at the main stage to keep the nerves at bay and fight his fight. Davis has put together a 2 fight win streak, moving his way up the UFC light heavy weight ladder. His keys to victory are wrestling and reach: he needs to show multiple level changes to keep his opponent guessing and off balance. From there, he can set up strikes or takedowns. Watch as the most elusive fighter takes on the wrestler turned striker as each man wants the UFC light heavy weight belt next.

My predictions: Machida stays elusive and fights his fight taking a UD.

Jose Aldo looks to defend his UFC featherweight championship belt for the 5th time against Chan Sung Jung. Aldo is looking to secure himself as the greatest featherweight champion of all time and continue to be known as one of the top three P4P fighters in a lot of people’s minds. His keys to victory are striking and aggression. He will use his striking to look for a KO/TKO. Sung Jung is looking to break Aldo’s championship run and be crowned the new UFC featherweight champion. His keys to victory are his ability to take a shot and aggressiveness. Sung Jung needs to make this a dog fight and stay in Aldo’s face. Be sure to watch this fight as both fighters will stay on their feet and trade from the pocket. Do not blink!

My prediction: Aldo with a KO/TKO in the 3rd round.

This UFC event is sure to be explosive with the featherweight championship title on the line, a potential number one contender match ups, and a few newcomers to the UFC. This card will exceed your expectations! Be sure to tune in and purchase UFC 163.
